Summary Letter on F-35 Impact on Tucson

Dear DFA-Tucson supporters and other Tucson citizens,

Last evening's monthly DFA meeting was very much a success. An overflow crowd of 75 activists heard four impassioned, detailed presentations on the scientific and political issues surrounding the prospect of basing the F35A Joint Strike Force jet fighter at Davis Monthan and our major commercial airport.

The conclusions?

1. The F35 jet fighter should not be based in any populous community.

2. It will take a sustained protest effort on the part of a critical mass of Tucsonans to get the Air Force and local political representatives to reconsider Tucson as a basing site.

The audience was "treated" to a demonstration of the noise-level differences between the F16, F18, and the F35. No one was left with any doubt as to the threat to our community of F35 noise pollution.

The process of citizen involvement in creating an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was explained. It was emphasized that good (damning) scientific data will not win the battle. It will take organized citizens, digging their heels in, to make the difference in the final outcome. Check out www.tucsonforward.com regularly for news and important dates.

Reduction (mitigation) of the F35's noise levels affecting the 300,000 Tucsonans in the "sound shadow" is improbable, if not impossible, according to a retired air traffic controller who spent two decades serving both DM and TIA facilities. The runway configurations and topographical limitations make "new fixes" suggested by proponents wishful thinking.

DFA-Tucson will continue to actively support the effort to educate Tucsonans on the probable impacts of implementing F35 basing here. Please inform your neighborhood associations of the need to become aware of this issue, consider taking official positions, and communicate with local council member on your position. This is the time for action. Next year will be too late....

Steven Lesh: North Dakota Has Something To Teach Us

DFA Tucson's Steven Lesh wrote an op-ed piece for the Arizona Daily Star, published today. The article, entitled "Here's something about North Dakota worth imitating", discusses the banking crisis and what alternatives Arizona could take. North Dakota has a state-owned, public bank and currently has no state debt.

"Local and state governments have become dependent on borrowing to finance day-to-day operations and have been severely impacted by the frozen credit markets.
However, in addition to providing short-term financing, state-owned banks could supply financing for long-term investments in state resource development such as solar energy."

July 22nd Meeting Recap: DFA Tucson Single Payer

The meeting was called to order by R. Graap. A summation of the current status of HR 3220, 676, the Kucinich amendment "allowing" states to develop single payer plans, the Weiner amendment to 3200 to replace it with 676 (have not heard any outcome on this) and the so-called public option in 3220 was given.

Jeff Latas gave an update on his efforts to push the AzDPC (Progressive Caucus) to support a resolution at the state demo meeting; this has since passed the AzDPC steering committee and is in circulation. His further comments during the strategy discussion were very helpful

Multiple strategies to further the pressure for single payer were discussed. These emerged as the ones to do:

1. Set up meeting with the Star editorial board. My thoughts are to try for 2 delegations: one of doctors and one of community activists.
2..Pressure Rep. Giffords to support a strong public option; strategy in part as below.
3. Do street theater presentations to dramatize the problems and get publicity.
4. Circulate and support Jeff's AzPDC resolution which will be presented on Aug 15 at the state meeting.

These are in process to one degree or another. The resolution is meant to convey to Giffords, Mitchell and Kirkpatrick to get on board for 676 or at a minimum, a strong public option. Pastor and Grijalva are 676 co-signers.

An update meeting is scheduled for Wed., July 29 at 7 p.m. at the same 6th Ward location.

Additions are welcomed. I should mention the "Mad as Hell Doctors" project which is another strategy to dramatize the support and need for 676; I'll see where that is going.

Reid's travels to five capitalist nations that use a single-payer health finance system - to get treatment for his "bum shoulder". In each country, he gains information from health professionals who are part of a private system financed with public dollars.

"In Sick Around the World, FRONTLINE teams up with veteran Washington Post foreign correspondent T.R. Reid to find out how five other capitalist democracies -- the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Taiwan and Switzerland -- deliver health care, and what the United States might learn from their successes and their failures.

Reid's first stop is the U.K., where the government-run National Health Service (NHS) is funded through taxes. "Every single person who's born in the U.K. will use the NHS," says Whittington Hospital CEO David Sloman, "and none of them will be presented a bill at any point during that time." Often dismissed in America as "socialized medicine," the NHS is now trying some free-market tactics like "pay-for-performance," where doctors are paid more if they get good results controlling chronic diseases like diabetes. And now patients can choose where they go for medical procedures, forcing hospitals to compete head to head."

"We need to see this crisis historically to get a sense of how serious this is. In every decade from 1820 to 1970, workers in the United States enjoyed a rising level of wages. Even during the Great Depression this was true. But since the 1970s, that history of the U.S. stopped. Real wages stopped rising in the 1970s and they have never resumed.

"Meanwhile, there has been a huge increase in productivity across the last hundred years. Most of it in the last 30 years -- the very period when wage increases stopped. What the workers get in those years stays flat. What they produce for their employers grows. This led to spectacular profits for U.S. corporations. After the 1970s, unprecedented corporate profits fueled an unprecedented stock market boom. The results were a fast-growing inequality of wealth and income dividing Americans, a bubble that burst first in the stock market and then in the real-estate market, and now the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

"What did the corporations do with that money? They paid salaries to executives no one had ever heard of before. They went on a binge of buying up other companies -- mergers and acquisitions -- bringing huge profits also to the financial sector that handled all the proliferating profits, bonds connected to mergers, initial stock offerings of new companies, and so on."

"Taxpayers are being called upon to clean up the messes of Wall Street. It's curious when banks and corporations are making money hand over fist, they get to keep everything. However, when their exotic financial instruments such as credit default swaps and collateralized debt obligations drown in red ink, then the public bails them out. Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz says the rescue plan "amounts to robbery of the American people.""

Richard Wolff Bio:

Richard Wolff is a well-known economist. After receiving his Ph.D. from Yale, he taught at the City College of New York from 1969 to 1973, and then began teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he has been full professor since 1981. He is the author of numerous articles and books on economics.

Help Needed for Financial Audit Bills: HR1207 & S604

By now you've seen and heard probably way too much on the Banks and the Federal Reserve (Fed). So, rather than grumble and shake your head in disgust any longer, here is an opportunity to try to do something - - and, IT'S EASY!

Here's some background:

Right now, there are parallel bills in the House (HR1207) and Senate (S604) to require a 'public' audit of the Fed. This has never happened in its nearly 100 year history. HR1207 already has over 175 cosponsors, but the Senate version (S604) has none. For more details please go here (this petition represents step 2 as recommended therein).

This petition represents a very small step, but sometimes change gets started that way - especially since there have been bills in Congress to revamp, abolish, or to nationalize the Fed... all left to die in committee (most recently HR7260 which died in 2008). Possibly because the Congress has been 'bought and paid for' - - this May, Senator Dick Durbin said: "They [the banks] own this place [the Senate]". But that is all the more reason to let them know there is grass roots support.

Abraham Lincoln also took on the bankers:

The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest to finance the War. So, Lincoln advised Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury notes to pay for the War effort. These Treasury notes were a debt free and interest free money, saying…”The Government should create, issue, and circulate all the currency and credits needed to satisfy the spending power of the Government and the buying power of consumers. By the adoption of these principles, the taxpayers will be saved immense sums of interest. Money will cease to be master and become servant of humanity.”

After Lincoln’s assassination, Congress revoked the Greenback Law and enacted, in its place, the National Banking Act. The national banks were to be privately owned and the notes (not money) they issued were to be interest bearing debt.

Richard Kimball has held elected positions in Arizona, both on the Corporation Commission and in the state legislature, before challenging John McCain for the US Senate in 1986. Congressional Scorecard - Spring Edition

Join us for a roundtable discussion on the performance of Congress during the first ninety days of its 110th session. You are invited to bring information to share on particular bills that are now pending in Congress to share with others, so that we might work together to promote progressive legislation, in addition to ones DFA-Tucson is promoting.

(Did you know that Cong Ron Paul and Barney Frank have introduced legislation to legalize production of industrial hemp this week? Last week, others introduced a fair elections bill. We need to have a scorecard to know how the game is being played...)

We will be concentrating on Congressional action to make elections inclusive and verifiable, to regulate banking, to promote single-payer health-financing, and to investigate Bush crimes. We will consider what are the best options available for grassroots groups to influence this Congress.

Finally, we will do some planning for the National Protest on Bank Bailouts to be held in Tucson this Saturday.

a. Economy and monetary reform: continue actively or leave primary effort to the new group?

b. Middle East and other wars of empire; what next?

c. Election Integrity: likely continue to be supportive with the established E.I. Committees.

d. Impeachment: conversion to Prosecution. The S.C. has considered this to be a top priority. Dick can update.

e. Campaign Finance Reform AKA "Follow the Money" Another top priority; can we have an impact?

There are other issues of great importance but likely we will be supportive of other groups actively working on them: Single Payer Health Coverage; Nuclear Power and Disarmament; Global Warming/Clean Energy and others.

Then there is a strong sense that we need real progressive candidates; Jeff and Dick both have thoughts and ideas about how to proceed and strategies for success.

We will push for continued and expanded coordination with like-minded groups and activities, such as Voices, World Harmony, Az. Progressive Caucus, Project Vote Smart, and the regional Democratic Party (and other parties as appropriate),. This listing not being all-inclusive.

Fatally Flawed, a newly-produced local documentary that chronicles the legal challenge to the May 2006 Pima County election which created the Regional Transportation Authority and generated a lawsuit resulting in the largest release of election data in US history, will be previewed for the public Monday, March 9, 2009 @ 7 pm.

An alliance of the Tucson Chapter of Democracy for America and Voices of Opposition will host the presentation on Monday, 7 pm, at the University of Arizona's Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering (AME) building on the northeast corner of Speedway and Mountain. Free to the public.

The issues involving the apparent lack of integrity of the electoral process in Pima County and Arizona and the almost three-year-old challenge to release of the RTA election ballots for a hand count remain headline news to this day. While Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard has indicated that the recount process is not over, questions remain over the whereabouts of the ballots and the procedure to be used to count them.

In addition to the screening, principal investigators of the election will be on hand to provide insight on the current issues related to the controversy.

Recently, members of the local Democratic Party's Election Integrity Committee offered individual opinions on the matter.

“The Democratic Party [and all other political parties] has a statutory right and a critical role in our state system to track and see what’s going on with our elections,” said Attorney Bill Risner, who is involved with the legal investigation into the validity of the May 2006 Regional Transportation Authority Election.

"Elections and election processes should not be secret, and when they are it's a strong sign of either outright fraud or an agency fearful of having its own incompetence exposed,” insisted Jim March, board member of Blackboxvoting.org and local election investigator. “True security always lies in openness.”

Michael Duniho, former election inspector in Maryland and computer analyst concluded, "It seems clear that our system of 'one-man, one-vote' only works if a large number of people monitor the election, to be sure it is honest."

From the words of those who controlled the election and others who have investigated the election, Fatally Flawed makes the case that:

1. Acts of omission and commission occurred before, during and after the May 2006 election by entrusted officials, constituting the charges of election fraud.

2. To date, government officials at the local and state levels have acted to thwart the resolution of these accusations of a rigged election.

3. Only a prompt, fair, and transparent hand counting of the May 2005 ballots will remove the cloud over the creation of the RTA.

On Wednesday, February 11, Democracy For America-Tucson will hold the third event in its current three-part series on Monetary Reform - a critical part of the Progressive agenda. Included will be a follow-up on the recent DFATucson sponsored presentation by Ellen Brown and her book Web of Debt. Given the recent and pending taxpayer funded bailouts of financial institutions, we the Citizens need to be vigilant on how these funds are spend and on whether the root causes of our current predicament are addressed.

A Conversation with Stephen Zarlenga will feature a live (via phone) presentation by the highly-respected executive director of the American Monetary Institute. Zarlenga will comment on the current banking crisis and make the case for a particular set of remedies that are intended to create a banking system based on human needs and social justice. Zarlenga is working closely with Congressman Dennis Kucinich on the American Monetary Act.

Audience participation will be encouraged.

Printed materials will be available, as well as the DVD of Ellen Brown's Jan 17 presentation in Tucson.

On June 21st DFA Tucson organized a seminar titled Iran Attack: the Downside and the Downside.

This session was held on an urgent basis with Dick Eaton, Prof. of History, UofA, expert on Iran and south Asia, Ret. Brig. Gen John Adams, Mike Bryan as moderator, and Dr. Rick Graap reviewing the medical consequences of an attack on the underground nuclear facilities at Natanz and Isfahan. The videotape is just out and we will show the one hour and 20 minute in-depth discussion which DFA-Tucson hopes to distribute widely.

Everyone is welcome and much needed! You will see an excellent and pungent discussion of the lunacy of an Iran attack, not to speak of the consequences which will be well outlined.

Al Baradei of the IAEA already predicted three: He will resign as head of the IAEA, the Middle East will become a firestorm, and Iran will proceed full-speed ahead with nuclear weapons development.

On February 20th, 2008, DFA-Tucson sponsored a public meeting with guest Maura Policelli, the Chief of Staff to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The two hour meeting was marked with potent statements by the audience on the issues of impeachment and the illegal occupation of Iraq. Ms. Policelli tried to put a good face on Rep. Giffords' positions, but it became apparent that political calculations are keeping Rep. Giffords from upholding her Constitutional duty by supporting an impeachment investigation, which millions of Americans have requested. To his credit, Rep. Grijalva has supported such an investigation and has consistently voted against supplemental funding for the continued occupation of Iraq.

DFA-Tucson and the ad hoc group Get Giffords On Board to Impeach are asking all activists throughout District 8 in Southern Arizona to:

1. Watch the video
2. Share it with others who feel Congress must reassert its authority now
3. Call Rep. Giffords office and tell her you have seen the video. Add your personal thoughts, including the need for her to "sign the Wexler letter" calling for investigations into torture, habeas corpus, wiretapping, signing statements and illegal war.

Addressed to Chair of DFATucson, Dr. Rick Graap:

Dr. Graap -Thank you for the opportunity to meet with the Tucson Chapter of the Democracy for America organization last night. On behalf of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, I was honored to listen to the views of some of the Southern Arizonans she represents and discuss issues of great importance to our nation.

I commend your group for its dedicated participation in America's democratic process -- exercising your First Amendment right to free speech is a bold act of patriotism and I salute you for it.

Despite the fact that Congresswoman Giffords has not signed onto the impeachment resolution sponsored by Congressman Kucinich, she greatly respects your views as do I.

As I explained last night, I personally believe that the impeachment of President Bill Clinton tarnished the idea, the process, and even the word "impeachment." Most Americans have seen it used as a politically-motivated and partisan manuever. I believe that explains , in part, why the current leadership in the House has hesitated to bring impeachment procedures forward.

In addition, when Democrats won back the Majority in the House in 2006, the passions and policy ideas of many leaders of the Caucus were unleashed. Having been in the Minority for twelve years as the Republican-led Congress, joined by the Bush Administration, led America in the wrong direction, many senior Members were anxious to change the priorities and start to repair some of the damage. Chairmanships were appointed, new committees were formed, and ambitious agendas were set.

The 110th Congress got off to a running start, passing landmark legislation on issues of great importance to Americans. During the first 100 hours, the House passed bipartisan legislation on ethics reform, raising the the minimum wage, lowering prescription drug prices, cutting the interest rates on student loans, repealing the subsidies for oil companies, and inves ting in renewable energy.

I realize that you may not think that any of these policies are as important as impeachment. I am simply doing the best I can to address the strong desire among the attendees last night to understand WHY impeachment may not have been put at the top of the "to do" list by the new House leadership.

Since being sworn in last January, Congresswoman Giffords has been fighting for a responsible end to U.S. military combat operations in Iraq, better care for wounded soldiers and veterans, and more solar energy as one way to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. She believes that there is much more to do - our nation is at a critical juncture and facing remarkable challenges. Every day she focuses her energy on the specific needs and concerns of Southern Arizonans, knowing that some of her constituents will not always agree with her.

Thank you again for your leadership and activism. Your efforts - and the work of your organization - are critically important to the health of our democracy. Please forward this email to the individuals who attended the meeting last night.

AGENDA: Follow-up with Maura Policelli, Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords

Open to all. Please attend and encourage others to do the same.

The previous lively meeting with Gifford's representative, Gabe Zimmerman, left a lot of unanswered questions regarding the Congresswoman's position on many critical issues. A list of questions have been resubmitted and we expect to have Maura Policelli, the Congresswoman's Chief of Staff, join us and answer a few questions. Join us for another lively and thoughtful conversation.

LIST OF QUESTIONS RE-SUBMITTED TO CONGRESSWOMAN GIFFORDS IN ADVANCE:

1. It is evident from your previous statements that you do not approve of multiple aspects of the behavior of Cheney/Bush. 23 members of Congress have signed HR 799 and now Cong. Wexler and 2 colleagues on the Judiciary Committee have, as of three weeks ago, called for a formal investigation; in that short time nearly 200,000 signatures of support have been submitted. It is evident that the more members, inside and outside of the Judiciary Committee, that call one way or another for action will result in getting around the unfortunate and inappropriate roadblock that Rep. Pelosi threw up, even before any action was initiated. Why therefore do you not actively support requesting a formal investigation?

2. In your mind,what additional grevious acts would Cheney and Bush have to do to support impeachmemt? The short list are the 7 items listed in our Petition for Impeachment, attached.

3. In the Nixon investigation, it took 6 months to effect his decision to resign as impeachment was imminent. Currently, the Judiciary Committee has already had multiple internal investigations and there have been multiple books published on the transgressions of Bush and Cheney. This being the case, if anything, the time for investigation would be dramatically foreshorted since so much is already documented. Does this not make the argument that there is insufficient time to effect impeachment moot? A related question would be is it more important to make the effort and educate the broad public on the issues, regardless of whether it leads to impeachment, THAN DO NOTHING?

4. There are many that say the Iraq War (2003 version) was clearly illegal by International Law, by the UN Charter as well as by provisions in the U.S. Constitution (a declaration of war was never approved). Furthermore, those who support the war by providing funding for same could be held liable by the International Criminal Court. What is the legal opinion on this from your sources?

5. Poll after poll done in the U.S. has shown majority support for leaving Iraq and bringing the troops home. We think you should conduct a poll of CD 8 constituents re the same issue, which could include a question about manning permanent residual bases there. "Redeployment" not otherwise defined could mean moving troops to the massive bases already established rather than moving them out of country altogether (except for the embassy). Would you be willing to do such a poll? If not, what would be the reasons?

6. The Iraqis in many polls have supported a timetable for withdrawal of troops. Polls also indicate than they feel (with perhaps the exception of a few selected areas) the presence of the troops makes things worse rather than better (i.e., the mentality of occupation). Why should we ignore these facts in our policy decisions towards Iraq?

7. You state you do not support the war but do support the troops, therefore justifying your support of additional funding for the war. As further troop funding would clearly prolong the war, how can you reconcile these points of view?

8. The war is being funding largely by bonds from China, Korea, Japan, S. Arabia and others; each incremental further increased funding exhaccerbates this, as well as passing on the debt to our children and grandchildren to pay. In that you support funding, what alternative funding mechanism do you propose to obviate gifting our children to pay for this?

9. What alternative plan(s) do you support for a stable Iraq and Middle East? What conclusions did you draw from your recent conversation with Prof. Eaton, Gen. Adams and others?

10. The latest in a long series of signing statements by Bush negates the laws passed by Congress re permanent bases, contractor fraud investigation, whistle blower protection and document requests from U.S. intel agencies. Attorney Gen. Mukasey recently stated that he would not enforce supaenas issued by Congress.
a. Are signing statements legal? Where in the Consitution is this procedure authorized?
b. Other than sending statements of disapproval, what other strategy could possibly be effective in the maintainence of duly passed laws?

11. The corrosive effect of money in our political elections has hit a new high in recent years. Do you support HR 1614? If not, what alternative approach do you support?

Message from Rep. Raul Grijalva on War Funding

I will oppose the Iraq supplemental to be voted on in the House this week. I continue to appreciate the difficult task that leadership faced in creating this legislation and the inclusion of a number of provisions in this bill that are desperately needed and that I wholeheartedly support. These include the minimum wage increase, continued recovery for the people and communities of the Gulf Cost region, and health care needs of our veterans and our children.

I have opposed funding this war from the beginning, and I have no interest in funding it now. The previous supplemental, The Iraq Accountability Act, though flawed and at odds with many of my beliefs, represented a chance for hope. It had represented a first, all be it tentative, step in the difficult process of finally bringing this devastating war to an ultimate end through accountability standards that were tied to a withdrawal plan to bring our troops home.

But I cannot in good conscience support this new version of an Iraq war funding bill. This bill removes important elements that hold the administration accountable for its decisions in this quagmire; no more unwaivable benchmarks, no more required certification of the Iraq government’s efforts to resolve long-standing political conflicts linked to a timeframe for transition allowing our troops to begin a long overdue schedule of redeployment home. These revisions have effectively reduced this supplemental to a paper tiger that will give the administration an unfettered extension to this ill conceived occupation, and an implied sanction by this Congress of the war, at least through the end of this fiscal year.

I cannot tell those individuals and the families of those individuals who have died or been injured in Iraq that I supported their continued participation in an unaccountable war without end.

On the afternoon of Election Day 2004, the world was abuzz with the news: Exit polls indicated that John Kerry would win the election and become the next president of the United States. That proved not to be the case. According to the official count-that is the number of votes tallied, not necessarily the number of votes cast-George W. Bush beat Kerry by a margin of three million votes. The exit polls however had predicted a margin of victory for Kerry of five million votes. In every "battleground" state across the nation the final tally swung clearly beyond the exit poll's margin of error to favor the president. How can one explain this eight-million-vote discrepancy between the Election Day exit polls and the official count? Either the exit poll data was wrong or the official count was wrong. Was the 2004 Presidential Election Stolen? analyzes the exit poll data and looks at documented examples of conventional vote suppression and outright vote fraud. It investigates the possibility that enough election fraud occurred to determine the outcome of the presidential race. And it asks the question why neither the government, nor the Democratic Party, nor any major media organization did their own investigation.

Steve Freeman has a PhD in organization studies from MIT's Sloan School of Management. He is a visiting scholar at the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Organizational Dynamics, where he teaches research methods and survey design (a domain that includes polling). He has received four national awards for best research paper of the year-on four different topics in three different fields.

Our endorsed CD8 candidate Jeff Latas has already reached thousands of voters through walks, phoning, house parties, and other efforts. Saturday walks start at 8:30 from two locations: Latas headquarters at 3325 N. First Ave. and the shopping center at 9130 E Valencia (for people who live on the east side of town). Our guest speaker will be Peri Jude Radecik of the Arizona Center For Disability Law, who will give a perspective on the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and voting technology options for accessibility and privacy for the differently-abled. We expect a lively and enlightening discussion following the presentation and welcome this opportunity to bring disability and voting enfranchisement activists together to pursue consensus solutions.

Also, Patty Puig, legislative candidate in LD 29 will introduce herself and tell why she is running.

DFATucson Endorses Jeff Latas for Congress

Democracy For America/Tucson (a non partisan, progressive organization) is pleased to announce its endorsement of Jeff Latas for Congress in Congressional District 8.

In a field of several worthy progressive candidates, Mr. Latas stands out for DFA/T due to his commitment to election process integrity, including his support of the unique and cutting-edge Arizona State Clean Elections system, and his commitment to a verifiable paper ballot and an auditable electronic voting system, which are issues of ongoing concern and activism for DFA/T members.

Members, who overwhelmingly voted to endorse Mr. Latas and had the opportunity to make comments on their ballots, noted Mr. Latas' wealth of leadership experience (as a result of his career in the Air Force, including work in Washington D.C. and the Mideast), as well as his ability to attract a broad range of voters, especially veterans.

Members also cited Mr. Latas' strong stance on environmental issues, particularly reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and his direct, progressive and clear stand on issues as evidenced by his responses to questions posed by DFA/T and the information posted on his website.

Finally, and very significantly, DFA/T is impressed with Mr. Latas' consistent opposition to the war in Iraq and his support of the Murtha plan to bring the troops home safely as soon as feasible.

DFA/T is proud to support Mr. Latas in the Demcratic primary and is committed to support whichever progressive candidate runs in the general election.
